Try Try Try To Understand

He never gave gifts.

And maybe it really wasn't a gift, but something someone had given him and since it was an album and it was the late 70's and I was the only kid left in the house, maybe it was just a spur of the moment thing. All I know is I was absolutely shocked when he came home one evening and gave me the only thing I ever remember him giving me.

I'm not complaining. None of us felt deprived.  It just seemed that mom had always taken care of Christmas and birthdays, signing Dad's name to the cards.  She made sure Christmases were magical for us, some of our best memories were opening our presents on Christmas Eve and celebrating Dad's Christmas birthday the next day.

So when he came through the door that nothing-special night he yelled at me to come to the kitchen. Then he handed me Dreamboat Annie, Heart's debut album.

Of course dad would have had no concept who Heart was or whether the album was anything a 17 year old girl would listen to, so it's likely he had gotten the album from someone and they told him one of his kids would probably like it.

It may have been the only thing I can remember my father ever giving me, but every time I hear the songs Crazy on You or Magic Man, I think back about Dad coming home that night and handing me that album.  I still like to think he actually did pick it out for me, even if all logic tells me differently.

I did spend months trying to figure out what could have possibly have motivated him to buy me a gift. I like remembering it that way.

You were the only reason he had, and the opportunity to give you something he knew you'd like. Most mothers I know - or every knew - are in charge of buying gifts and signing dad's name.

AND. . . I'm rarely on facebook. I never bothered to figure it out and just go when I'm totally bored.

If I ever get your name sent to me, would it come through email??? Cuz I'm not sure where the "request" thing is on facebook. I'll go look right now.

Now, am I on there as Dana wyz or Lotta Joy.....I don't remember! LOL

I went there (yick) as Dana Wyz. I saw one request to play a game. Then I went back in as Lotta Joy, and saw the same requests.

I think I used to play games as Lotta Joy, and read things as Dana Wyz. Now I don't know who I am at this moment....

At least he had taste in music... even if ultimately it was your taste.

Not quite Dave. His taste was the old time country music. Back when I couldn't stand country music with the exception of Hank Williams Sr.

This was back when no parents shared musical tastes with their teenaged kids.

What's funny is that now nearly all of us "kids" listen to country music.

Maybe it's not so funny. Today's country is the 70's light rock. I can't listen to the likes of Loretta Lynn, but if I'm not listening to talk radio, I'm listening to country.

Indy doesn't have a decent classic rock station.

My dad only gave me on gift and it was on my 16th birthday. He gave me his old (75 years old then) 22 long barrel rifle. I still have it. But he didn't mind giving me the belt, though. And the only music in the house came from the radio with the Louisiana Hey Ride and Grand Ole Opry. At least until my sister got a job and bough our first TV and HiFi (before stereo). Then is was Frank Sinatra (still hate his music)and teen music of the late 40's and 50's.
