My friend told me he had two periods of time he was really, really frightened in Vietnam.
One was the first few weeks in country.
The other was the last few weeks before he went home.
In between, it was mayhem, boredom, sorrow, physical pain and a lot of time wondering what the hell he was doing.
I remember the dishonorable behavior shown toward vets when they returned from Vietnam. The media contributed greatly to this behavior and I'll never forgive them for what they did.
That pretty much sums it up Jess. My brother visited the Wall this week. He send Bob a text asking him the names of the guys he knew.
Bob couldn't/wouldn't remember. He knew them when we were first married when the traveling Wall came through our town.
He doesn't even want to remember now. He says he shut down. Almost refused to even talk with the new guys coming in because he never knew when/if they might be next.
The one guy killed in a horrible Christmas Eve had only been there two weeks. And his wife had just had a newborn right after he left.
Though I am against war unless in defense of our country, I thank them and even buy beers anomalously to our guys today so they will not have to feel what we felt coming home.
Compared to the other war memorials there, the Wall is surely understated, which given the lack of gratitude they received upon returning home it almost seems to fit how the Vietnam Vets were unjustly treated back then. I have plans to post about this exact thing.

So, thank you Vietnam Vets.

So sad.
