Thirty Six Years Ago

I was still living with my parents, had my first full time job as a billing clerk at Visiting Nurses Association when this hit.

The drifts on our country road were higher than my head. It was the snowiest January on record for Indiana.

Don't ask me why all these googled pics are black and white. We DID have color film in 1978.

Ok. The color pics look almost the same as the black and white.

It literally took until June for some of the snow piles to melt.

Three weeks ago tomorrow (Sunday) we arrived here on sunny Fort Myers. It's been very cool just after we arrived. I've only had one day a spent a few hours at the pool. We. Still haven't made it to the beach. Supposed to be 80 degrees here on Monday, so that will be our first beach day.

In the meantime, Indy is closing on that record snowfall January. It is now the second snowiest January on record and they have been experiencing sub zero temps. Only just a few more inches of snow this week and it will top 1978.

To say I am not complaining about the cool temps here is an understatement.

I HATE Indiana winters. Apparently I would have hated this winter only second to 1978. So far.

It has been a record breaking winter all over the country. Enjoy the beach... dammit. I wish we were there regardless of the weather.

We had that same winter in Michigan.
A friend called one night and said he and his brother were watching the Hawaii Open and wanted to go on a golf outing. The plant was closed.
I asked where?
An hour later they pulled in my drive and we drove to Jacksonville NC to play 18 holes.

My wife's father died at the height of the blizzard of '78. She said it took days before they could bury him and most of his relatives (who lived in KY) could not attend. She has told me about walking through the blizzard to her sister's house (who had no phone) to tell her the bad news.

This was 11 months before we met.

Heading to the beach today, Coffey. Just got back from a bike ride through the preserve next to us. I may never come home.

Ed, did you drive through some of that mess just to play golf?

Joe, I can't imagine. Especially having to walk to her sister's. I'm sure those memories never go away.

I've heard there's another round of bitter cold and snow up that way. What a great winter to be gone.

It is sunny and 70 right now -- at least in my office. It is sunny and unbearably cold outside -- 2F, with a windchill of minus 137F(I might exaggerate the windchill)

It was surreal until southern Ohio.
Like driving a hundred miles in a ditch with snow piled higher than the car on either side.
See my post about my pot use :)

My brother and I drove the closed roads looking for stranded motorists and pulling them out of ditches. I loved that man. He was my hero.
