Not Hoosier Hospitality

Today, it was announced that this next Super Bowl at Jersey's Met Life Stadium would not allow any tailgating before or during the big game.

Ironically, when Indy hosted the Super Bowl in 2012, a local reporter was broadcasting that morning with a group of tailgators from of all places, New Jersey.

The group of visitors were lamenting the fact that they forgot to bring the hot sauce to their feast they were busy grilling. If they had left to get some, they would have missed their prime parking space they grabbed by coming very early that morning.

When the reporter was back on the air in the same location only 30 minutes later, the Jersey guys were estatic. No fewer than five different Hoosiers had seen the report, jumped in the vehicles and drove downtown to bring these perfect strangers some hot sauce.  They couldn't imagine a town where  people displayed such hospitality to ordinary visitors.

I wonder today if those Jersey guys were thinking about our hospitality when they discovered their own city won't even allow anyone to tailgate at their own Super Bowl.

Jersey must be a bunch of losers.

Pics of the week of tailgating and partying during Indy's Super Bowl Week.

This is OUTSIDE on Georgia Street, weeklong concerts while they closed off several downtown streets.

Bet we get that Super Bowl selection again. There was not one bad review of our town's biggest party ever.

Coming to Floruba was a culture shock for us. '

Many times in Indiana, when I owned a hoopty and it was snowing, strangers came to my assistance with jumper cables and I did not fear for my life.

Down here, you either keep your car in running order or die on the roadside gasping for water.

I like Indianapolis.

Only those who have spent their lives in grouchy olaces understand how different Indiana is, Dana. I've had people from NY and California explain what I never knew before.

Ed, that's because you were stolen away from your Indy family long ago.

It is Jersey, that says it all. Apparently, folks in New Jersey are not capable of operating a gas pump, since only trained professionals are allowed to do this simple task Hoosiers manage every day.

Perhaps it is a precaution, the Meadowlands used to be a dump (as in landfill) and the authorities ar concerned the escaping methane fumes will blow the place sky high?

Rita, I came here via Geeeez, and I have enjoyed reading your blog! I love your sense oh humor.

Hey, I've seen you post about your travels in Italy. Are you going back any time soon? We stayed at my friend's agriturismo summer of 2012 for her wedding and want to go back next year. I LOVED IT!

Hi Jen. Thanks for coming by.

What part of Italy did you stay? We were just barely outside of Volterra at an olive farm. Our last full day we visited her friend's winery agriturismo. I swear it looked like a bright green Grand Canyon.

I literally stood outside the van with my jaw dropped open.

I'm afraid Italy has ruined me for traveling anywhere else.

If you're planning a trip, I would gladly share the places we stayed with you.

I'll want you though, we did not want to stay in some luxury hotels, we wanted flats that were right in the middle of Venice, Cinque Terre and Rome.

Although we did stay at a fabulous B&B right at the top of the Spanish Steps owned by a fabulous lady originally from Philly.

Rita, we stayed about 3miles from Bucine (tiny town), but the next larger town is Arrezzo. We visited Volterra while we were there! Lovely town. We also stayed in Venice and Florence. We didn't have time to see Rome, but we might go back next November. It seems impossible right now, but we'll see. ;-)

No luxury hotels for us. Clean is good enough. My friend's in-laws own a vineyard / agriturismo, so we stayed there for most of the trip. We like to rest and soak it in, versus frantic sight-seeing.

Send me any info you'd like to share, or travel tips. We went to the Uffizzi and the Academia, and I regret not planning it better.

But it was by FAR my favorite travel experience!! And Yes, I'm afraid we are definitely spoiled from here on out! ;-)

I would LOVE to see Cinque Terre!

Rita, your nephew has a good eye! What kind of camera did he use on the trip?

A Nikon D90. It's much too big for me. Although that's not why my pics are as good as his, he just has a natural eye. He's had a few of his pics published, Goodyear bought one for an ad. And it was only of skid marks on the Indy 500 track. ;). He has thousands of great pics and the one that brings the most money was tire marks in asphalt.

Very cool! We use the same DSLR. He's definitely got a good eye!
