What a memory! My dad used to sell poppies, and I have not seen a veteran selling them in my area (northern Indiana) for years!
My dad was in Bastogne, and never talked about the war much when I was young. Fortunately, later in his life I had the wonderful opportunity to take him to a reunion of his Division, the 10th Armored Division. It was such an honor, and so amazing to see how much those men, even after 50 years, still loved and cared so deeply for one another. There aren't many of them left any more, but every Memorial Day I think back to that reunion, and remember some of their stories.
Thank you for this post. God bless all those men and women, past and present, who fought so hard and so bravely so that we could have our freedom.
Thx Babs. I'm glad you were able to find out about your dad's service. It's important we pass along the stories of the sacrifices all of our fine young soldiers have made for our freedoms. These guys were in Nashville, Indiana this past weekend. I remember as a kid, you always saw the poppies sold during Memorial Day weekend, this brought all that back. Haven't seen them for years.
