I was staying all night at her house and I wanted to watch a movie when she and her husband were deciding to go to bed.
So I asked her, "Is it really scary?" She said no.
So off to bed they went, probably 10 pm or so and I began to watch the movie alone.
The opening scenes were not scary of course, but the music, oh God, the music. It began to creep me out immediately.
I laid on the floor, close to the TV, so I could turn down the sound when it seemed to get too loud. It started out that the music was the loudest.
Of course, the storyline was fascinating and the cast, amazing.
The first time I had to quickly change the channel was when I first saw these two.
They started to freak me out.
Everytime they showed the girls, I reached up and changed the channel.
The night got later and later and I felt very alone in the house.
Between the "Danny's not here, Mrs Torrence" and the "REDRUM" I was hooked and spent the late evening jumping up to change the channel whenever the blood came streaming through the hallways.
I could not believe my own sister told me this movie was NOT scary.
To this day it's one of the best and scariest movies ever made.
The next morning when I talked to her about the show, my sister said, "Well, I got to thinking about that, I guess it's not really scary if you're watching it in the middle of the afternoon with a house full of people, probably watching it all alone at night it would be scary."
Yeah, thanks for that sis.
And here I am thirty years later watching it alone late at night. Bob went off to bed, we're in our Florida vacation home and I have my internet friends to keep me from feeling too scared and the remotes right next to me to change when it gets too scary.

I think by scary, I meant "gory". It's not so gory as some of those "chop 'em up" movies. But what was scary was watching the movie with my six-month-old baby girl in her bed on the other side of the wall from the TV, and she started saying "REDRUM....REDRUM".
She was an early talker, and also liked to do the Incredible Hulk growl when that show came on. That was pretty funny. But REDRUM coming out of a baby's mouth is just plain spooky.
This is one of those movies that if Im channel surfing and see it's on I have to watch it. I happened on it the other night too, Caught if from the beginning. after reading the book the only thing I would have liked to see in the movie would have the movie follow the book more on the ending. I guess the budget wouldn't allow the Overlook to explode into tiny bits. Much cheaper to have Jack sitting there with ice hanging from his face. All the scary books and movies produced by Stephen King makes me wonder what kind of nightmares this guy must have.
C&C-
I too read the book first and was then a little disappointed in the movie. The second (mini-series) movie was more faithful to the book, but didn't have Jack Nicholson's cache.
While at a convention in Denver, we drove out to Estes Park to see the Stanley Hotel. The drive is breathtaking and the town is surrounded by high hills, and I heartily recommend going. While there I asked, "How often are you snowed in?" The answer... "Never!" It doesn't get that cold, and snow-clearing equipment starts working the roads the moment the precip starts to fall. When Stephen King stayed there he just imagined what it would be like to be stranded in such a place.
A vivid imagination indeed... that's why he's rich and we continue to try to win the lottery.
G.B. I saw the movie first, then I read the book. I know they have to cut the heck out of S.K.'s books for the movie or it would be 6 hours long, but after I read the book it just seemed like the ending was a big letdown compared to the book. "She creeps" and then boiler blowing the whole building to bits would have been much better. The best movie taken from a novel I think was "1984" the one release in 84 not the version from the late 60's. It was Richard Burton's last film and he was great as O'brian, and John Hurt as Winston Smith was dead on. They should make that book required reading in high school. It is very relevent today with "Big brother" in the Whitehouse. Now it looks like nanny-gov is going after my salt! It never ends. Boy I went off on a tangent there didn't I? how did I make the turn from a comment on The Shining to a seditious rant
Because that's who you are C & C.
